Owner operators should be ready for cell service cuts.
In the event of a network outage, owner-operators can benefit greatly from using an email app rather than a web-based email service. Email apps are designed to automatically download and store emails on your truck’s onboard device. This ensures that critical information regarding deliveries, routes, or schedules remains accessible even when you’re offline. This feature is crucial for truck drivers who need to stay updated with timely communications. Unlike web-based email, which requires an internet connection, email apps will notify you of new messages as soon as connectivity is restored, helping you avoid missing any important updates.
Additionally, it’s advisable to save your frequently used maps for offline access in your preferred navigation app. Here’s how you can prepare:
Google Maps:
1. Open Google Maps: Ensure you are connected to the internet and logged into your Google account.
2. Search for the Area: Enter the location you wish to download in the search bar.
3. Select the Area: Tap on the location’s name at the bottom to view its details.
4. Download the Map: Look for the “Download” option (you might need to tap on the three-dot menu to find it). Tap this option.
5. Adjust the Area: Pinch and zoom to choose the specific area you want to save. Bigger spaces will necessitate additional storage capacity.
6. Save the Map: After adjusting the view, tap “Download” again.
7. Access Offline Maps: To find your offline maps, tap on your profile picture or initial at the top right and select “Offline maps.”
Apple Maps:
1. Prepare for Offline Use: Unlike Google Maps, Apple Maps doesn’t offer a direct way to download maps for offline use. Instead, it caches the data you access while online. Open the map and navigate through the area you plan to travel.
2. Search for the Area: Enter the desired location in the search bar and wait for the map to fully load.
3. Browse the Map: Move around the map to ensure adjacent areas are loaded.
4. Zoom In and Out: Zoom in to view detailed streets and out for a broader view. This will help cache all relevant details.
5. Force Close the App: Once you’ve loaded all necessary areas, force close the app to save the cached data.
6. Access Cached Maps: When you use Apple Maps offline, it will display the cached information, though real-time features like traffic updates won’t be available.
Important Notes:
● Download or cache maps before you leave areas with connectivity.
● Offline maps have a time limit and should be updated periodically when you regain internet access.
● There are limitations to how much you can download, particularly on Google Maps, so you may need to save multiple areas for long trips.
● Stored data in Apple Maps might not remain intact after a software update or if the cache is cleared by the system.
Owner operators need to be prepared for occasional cell service interruptions. These disruptions can impact communication and operations, so having backup plans and alternative ways to stay connected is crucial for maintaining efficiency on the road. For owner-operators driving through areas without cell service, making strategic stops at locations with free Wi-Fi, such as Starbucks, truck stops, or rest areas, can be invaluable. These stops provide opportunities to check in with dispatch, connect with family, and download essential documents or maps for your journey, helping you stay informed and connected on the road.
